Finally got to this after wanting to read it for a long time. Fascinating, though at times very upsetting.
It's been nearly 20 years since Brooks traveled and spent time with the women described in this book. It has me wondering if/how the circumstances of Muslim women have changed in the intervening years. I was thinking how nice it would be to have a second edition.
I did, however, find an afterword, written shortly after 9/11, on the author's website:

This was a well-written, educational book that reads more like a novel than the nonfiction it is. Highly recommended.

As a prizewinning foreign correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Geraldine Brooks spent six years covering the Middle East through wars, insurrections, and the volcanic upheaval of resurgent fundamentalism. Yet for her, headline events were only the backdrop to a less obvious but more enduring drama: the daily life of Muslim women. Nine Parts of Desire is the story of Brooks' intrepid journey toward an understanding of the women behind the veils, and of the often contradictory political, religious, and cultural forces that shape their lives. Defying our stereotypes about the Muslim world, Brooks' acute analysis of the world's fastest growing religion deftly illustrates how Islam's holiest texts have been misused to justify repression of women, and how male pride and power have warped the original message of a once liberating faith.

Saw this on your wishlist - hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
What a great surprise (RABCK). Thank you eponine38
Way better than average read about the daily lives of Muslim women. This was authored by a Western foreign correspondent in the middle east for many years. Placing in the non fiction vbb.
