Gave this a go, but it didn't suit my taste. So here it is for someone else to enjoy hopefully.

First heard about this book on a programme for WBN in 2011. It's not my usual style of read but it piqued my interest so it went on my wishlist. Thanks for the swap maid-of-kent, I'll let you know what I make of it - though it might be a while (have the typical BCer TBR mountain!) :o)

Mmmmm....what to say about this book! As I said in my previous JE it's not my usual style of read & in all honesty I can't say I enjoyed it - though it was a compelling read & it never crossed my mind to give up on it. I know it's been compared to "The Curious Incident..." & "Room" & the writing style means that's inevitable but for me it lacked the charm of "Room".

Parts of it made me feel very uncomfortable & a couple of points I don't feel were resolved (Sonia's fingers for one) but I probably missed something subtle that would have clarified things.

For a book I didn't really enjoy it does keep coming back into my thoughts especially the ending which I thought was AWFUL!! Maybe awful is the wrong word, I don't mean it's badly written or anything but it's left me feeling a bit shell-shocked, so awful seems to be the word that fits the best. I'm concious of the fact that I'm passing this book on so don't want to say anything to spoil it for the next reader - look forward to hearing someone else thoughts.

Thanks for sharing maid-of-kent & I'll be passing it on shortly to another BCer who has it on her wishlist :o)

I had some doubts if I will want to read this after about first 25 pages, but as it was fast reading I kept at it and at the end I'm glad I did. The story is depressingly familiar as I live in London, about a deprived community and knife crime; a young boy gets killed and the story evolves around that. The narrator is a 11-year old boy Harrison, recently arrived with half of his family from Ghana; so the style is quite simple on the face of it. However, his distinctive optimism and way of seeing life is quite touching. The ending was brutal though (one of Harrison's favourite words!).

I'm reserving this for the -One-Book-a-month draw June 2016.
