Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are called to a safari lodge in Botswana's Okavango Delta to carry out a delicate mission on behalf of a former guest.

The Okavango makes Precious appreciate once again the beauty of her homeland: it is a paradise of teeming wildlife, majestic grasslands and sparkling water. However, it is also home to rival safari operators, fearsome crocodiles and disgruntled hippopotamuses. What's more, Mma Makutsi still does not have a date for her wedding to Phuti Radiphuti and is feeling rather tetchy herself. But Precious knows that with a little patience, just as the wide river will gently make its way round any obstacle, so will everything work out for the best in the end . . .

I acted like an Okavango crocodile & snapped this one up. (I did use hands rather than teeth!)

Second book, and second 8/10 for the year, but a 'would like to re-read one day' rating for a different reason. I wouldn't come back to this one to get more out of it, or to understand it better, or in search of profound truths, but for a fun time with some familiar people: the double comfort of the title. You know, the same way you can enjoy buttery mashed potato as much as an unfamiliar dish where part of the pleasure is trying to work out just what that herb or spice you can taste is. (Why do my reviews contain so many food analogies?)

Actually, the bit above about profound truths may be doing Alexander McCall Smith a disservice, since the belief that (nearly) all people are fundamentally good is a theme that runs through all of this series. That there are scheming Violets in this world is a cause for sadness and sometimes shock, but it is still possible to treat them with kindness. Acceptance may take a little longer, and forgiveness even more time, but we don't have to be nasty meantime.

And finally, on a totally different level, I'm really getting to like Grace's shoes.

Oops - forgot to journal when I picked it up, sorry1

I don't think I've missed any in this series - I'm more prone to picking up ones I've already read. More of the usual gentle and moral tales and musings on life, the inherent goodness of people, and Botswana, its ways, history and people. A pleasant way to pass an hour or so, and a new location when the detective agency goes on safari to track someone down, and it's always nice to progress this story that I've been reading on and off for so many years.
