1980s Washington Square Press paperback of the 1937 novel. This was on my list of best classics to read when I found this copy today in the free books box on the porch of Dimond Library.
I can let this one go after I read:
1935 Your Turn, Mr. Moto [n/a]
1937 Pull, Pull Together (short story) [read 2012]
Edit March 30, 2013: This won a Pulitzer Prize, and I can kind of see why, but I file it under the category of *important* books that are more of a slog to get through than enjoyable as a read. After the first 20 pages or so I skimmed the rest, and so probably missed a bunch of the supposed satire. But too much of it just seemed like a litany of daily minutiae that fills the live of three generations of self-absorbed upper class elites, and so, well, who cares. I found it difficult to care about whatever difference might exist between one generational member and another. It's told through a series of letters and such, and that gimmick can also add to the lack of involvement in a series of characters' lives. But beyond those criticisms, for what it is, I will concede that the book is impressive in effort.
