"It is the winter of 1952, and Isabel Carey is struggling to adjust to the realities of married life in Yorkshire. Isolated and lonely, she is also intensely cold. And her husband - a doctor - is rarely home. And then one night she discovers an old RAF greatcoat in the back of a cupboard. She puts it on her bed for warmth - and is startled by a knock at her window. Outside is a young man. A pilot. And he wants to come in........."

A beautifully written ghost story, set in World War II Britain...
Also a love story, which highlights the differences and similarities between life in the 80s and current life, and how women adjusted (or not) to their given roles.

A sample of good prose:
"Silence about the past does not mean that the past has died down. Instead, it remains alive within us, even if unable to speak. The past needs resolution, or, at least, it needs to be recognized for what it is. This is true on a personal level and is also true of large historical events. We may hide from the past, but it will always find us."

I love this initiative by Hammer to publish horror stories, in the same tradition as the 50s and 60s films which I have enjoyed (and still enjoy) watching.

Thank you so much for sharing this Wish list with me, maid-of-kent; it made for some pleasurable evenings, and will soon continue its travels.

I read this over the weekend and enjoyed it very much. It isn't a very scary sort of ghost story, luckily, as I'm not much of a horror fan. Actually, it kind of reminded me of Tom's Midnight Garden by Philippa Pearce, which I loved - and the author too apparently, which she mentions in the afterword.
Set in England in the 1950s, the story feels nicely atmospheric. Though the war is over, it is still very much part of people's lives. I also liked how the 'ghost' world and the 'real' world seem to overlap at times, turning them into ambiguous things.

Thanks for giving me the chance to read it Bookworm-lady :)

I had a hard time figuring out what to say about this book. I do like ghosts stories but this one didn’t grab my attention as this type of stories usually do. The whole idea was great but somehow, the atmosphere wasn’t quite there. The writing was nice, just enough characters to make it interesting, with a good psychology to them but still, I couldn’t quite get into the story. Maybe it was simply a case where my mind wasn’t completely there when I read it… or because I’m used to what the author Susan Hill writes, as I honestly think she’s a master in this genre. Still, it was a book worth reading.
