This is a 2nd copy of this well written witty little novel about the secrets of becoming
an englishman. Excellent reading.
an englishman. Excellent reading.
Vielen herzlichen Dank für diesen schönen RABCK!!!
Jack and Sadie Rosenblum escaped the Holocaust and made a new life for themselves and their daughter in London. But although they are doing well for themselves, Jack feels frustrated he may never achieve his dream of becoming a true Englishman, seeing as he can't seem to lose that German accent and can't get accepted into a golf club, while Sadie is haunted by the memories of everbody they have lost.
Their lives drastically change when Jack decides that if he can't seem to become an Englishman in London, he may just make it out in the country, and he buys an ancient cottage in Dorset.
While I loved the concept and characters of this book, I wasn't quite so pleased with the execution; Solomons' prose has a lovely flow to it and some passages are quite beautiful, sometimes even haunting. Yet sometimes, it all seems a tad heavy-handed or overdone, and the frequent typos (or poor editing?) was what really annoyed me. I can't vouch for the Yiddish, but since German was such an important element in the story, I really don't see why they couldn't get a native speaker to check it for them. Dear folks at Hodder & Stoughton, it's not like there are no German speakers in London (if I know three off the top of my head), now is it? Go and employ one of them, why don't you?
Still, a lovely idea, lovable characters, and I can't see who wouldn't immediately fall for the Dorset countryside. Now all I really want is a holiday and a big drink of cider (and if possible, a glimpse of woolly-pig, please). :)
Reserved for trik, who has this on her wishlist.

Picked the book up at our meet-up at the Dingle's in Mettmann.
At first I liked the cover but the back-cover text is quite promising, too.
As I mostly read crime, this book is a bit of an exception. I'm looking forward to it.

I have to admit, I did not finish the book. The story and I somehow did not get on very well.
The book and I will be on our way to England tomorrow to find a more interested and persistent reader.
