5 out of 10

Listened to in November, 2003.

Five and a half stars, I'll give it, just to differentiate it from the ones that came before, which got more stars.

This is a book on CD. And the story was pretty decent. Violet, Klaus and Sunny encountered the most miserable living conditions yet -- at a school staffed by a banana eating bore, a metric system obsessed bank-robber, and a violin-playing maniac. There they were housed in the "orphan shack" which came infested with dripping brown fungus and territorial pinching crabs. Punishments for the oddest of infractions consisted of taking away the student's eating utensils or drinking glasses, or being made to fashion their own staples out of metal rods. Fortunately, the Baudelaires did befriend the two surviving Quagmire triplets -- Isadora and Duncan -- who mirrored them in unfortuante ways. The best part of the book was that it wasn't immediately obvious to me why Coach Genghis forced our heroes into the S.O.R.E program. When I realized the reason, it made great sense. And Count Olaf got away with more in the end than I expected, too.

But one of the reasons I didn't rate this book higher was because the voice of both the rude and violent Carmalita Spatz and Vice Principal Nero were particularly irritating, and their characters grated on my nerves. I found myself tensing my shoulders whenever I knew they were about to speak lines of dialogue. Chant with me now: Cake sniffing Orphans in the orphans shack!

4 out of 10

Well, this was an interesting experience, hearing the book instead of reading it, but this is one experience that I don't think I want to repeat. A couple of the voices were shrieky and really grated on my nerves [added later: I didn't realize that I used the same words as the previous reviewer - sorry! - but obviously the voices are quite nerve grating]. As for the story, much the same thoughts as I've had before, but this one was a little nicer as the orphans actually found some friends. It made them become a little more rounded instead of the flat characters that I keep seeing them as.

I apologize for not journaling this sooner. This arrived a few days ago, but I've been laid up with my back, and this just kinda got lost on the table with all the other mail.

I look forward to listening to it, and then passing it on to another Lemony Snicket fan.

Thanks again, bodesoda!

Oh my gosh, make it stop!!

I'm sorry, but I got halfway through the first CD and had to quit. First of all, the character voices are the most annoying I have ever heard on an audiobook. I cringed every time Nero or Carmelita had to speak. Secondly, Lemony Snicket should not read his own books. He's too soft-spoken (I had the volume turned all the way up and I still couldn't hear him very well) AND his hint of a lisp really started to get on my nerves. The "authere" academy, indeed.
