I picked this up from the book swap shelf at the school I did my student teaching at either in the fall of 2015 or the spring on 2016 last spring because it had been written by Lois Lenski. I had adored the book the Strawberry Girl as a child when my grandparents gave it to me and was thrilled to see this old classroom copy on the bookshelves.

I thought that this was a good introduction to the practice of capturing white settlers and adopting them into their tribes that occurred during the early settlement of American colonies by the English and the French. Lenski does a fantastic job of portraying Mary's capture and what she must have been feeling as she adjusted to her new life. The story was written in away which shows a lot of positive and fair treatment of such a sensitive subject and towards the Native American Seneca tribe. Especially considering this was written in 1941 way before the civil right movement in America.
