An exuberant young journalist, Susan Greenelsh, left her home in Brisbane on April 24, 1984 on an overseas tour which she had planned to broaden her knowledge of people and places. She was not to return. A little over a year later, on June 19, 1985, she died in a bizarre accident in Tanzania.

Meanwhile, anticipating that she might ultimately produce a book on her travels, she had written lengthy letters to her family and maintained detailed personal diaries which she intended to use later and which now provide sources for this book.
