A bit uneven, but mostly enjoyable memoir of Ms. Spencer's few weeks as a summer nanny in Paris. She goes to the same family for whom her sister Sarah had worked, and Sarah was a hard act to follow. Rachel is somewhat disorganized and absent-minded and has a difficult time accomplishing the list of tasks set out for her in The Nanny Book kept by the mother, Estelle - and this causes the children to miss medical appointments and music lessons. [Unfortunately, the reader is not always kept informed as to Estelle's reaction to these oversights, an omission that bothered me a bit and made me think that some events may have been fabricated to add drama.]

She has her hands full with Diane, the very rebellious 14-year-old, but this is somewhat compensated for by the adorable younger children Léonie and Constantin, aged 11 and 7.

Rachel learns some cooking skills from the father, an enthusiastic and excellent chef. By the end she is trying new things herself and copying down recipes to try when she returns home.

And through it all, she learns about herself and shares these discoveries in wonderfully flowing prose. This introspection was, for me, the best part of the book. I could overlook her obsession with fashion and other things that don't interest me very much, because it was a joy to read her excellent writing.

I purchased "Au Paris" from a now defunct used bookstore. (Hate to see this happening everywhere.)
Purchased because of an interest in travel to France. The book was interesting but was more a personal journey than about travel.
