"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

I breezed right through this book. It sucked me in from the first few words and was very engrossing. It's the story of a young Nigerian woman who meets an American couple on the beach in Nigeria in a rather unusual encounter that changes all of them. It's about the haves and have-nots, about the amazingly huge differences between the western world and the developing nations such as Nigeria, where it can be very dangerous just to be alive. It's about what one person can do about it, and what we all might not be willing to do. Highly recommended.

So much of this book is so very good. Little Bee’s story of life in her Nigerian village to refugee in the UK is told through such a beautiful voice. I loved every chapter that Little Bee narrated. Other chapters were told from the perspective of Sarah, a 30-something white professional woman and a recent widow. I struggled with some of the Sarah-narrated chapters. There was little about her that I was able to connect with although I did begrudgingly admire her more and more as the story progressed. The men in this story don’t come off well. And then there was Charlie. Sweet little boy-child that softened all of Sarah’s edges and stole everyone’s heart. Maybe it’s because I am a mother of sons, but I adored the way Charlie was written. I loved the way Little Bee didn’t talk down to him and yet still remembered he was only a child.

Very good. Recommended
