Paris, July 1942. Sarah, a ten year old girl, is taken with her parents by the French police as they go door to door arresting Jewish families in the middle of the night. Desperate to protect her younger brother, Sarah locks him in a bedroom cupboard - their secret hiding place - and promises to come back for him as soon as they are released.
Sixty years later, Sarah´s story intertwines with that of Julia Jarmond, a journalist investigating the round-up.
What a book!!! It grabbed my attention right away and I just had to keep on reading to see how it would end. Some parts of it were really difficult to read but I could not put it down!!!+3

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
A birthday surprise through the Birthday group:) I hope you will enjoy this wishlist book:)
Great - a wishlist book! Thank you so much, Bjorg, for sending this as a birthday surprise :D
This is a very interesting story which highlights aspects of Jewish persecution I knew nothing about. It is a harrowing story, very believable and has made me want to go to Paris, to pay my respects in Drancy and to track down the plaque marking the location of the "Vel d'Hiv".
On the other hand, the parallel story was all too transparent and the narrator's 11-yr. old daughter is just too good to be true... That's why I wouldn't give this book any higher than 8/10.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I decided to take part in J4Shaw's "current reads" challenge and chose to make a surprise RABCK of my current read. Having the book with me in the UK, it made sense to choose someone in the UK to post it to, so I was more than pleased to find an address actually in the area where I am staying! As my friend will be in the Kirkstall area of Leeds tomorrow, she is going to attempt to deliver the book by hand. If that fails, for whatever reason, I will post the book from the centre of Leeds on June 27th.

han_cat, I hope you enjoy this book and I hope it was a nice surprise for you! Best wishes from Germany :)
