Finally, someone gives Aimee Mann her due. And the essay on "Thunder Road" almost made me want to give Bruce Springsteen another chance. (But c'mon – Nelly Furtado? That's a stretch.) Still, this is one of the best books I've ever read about the uniquely human ability to make and respond to music. It also contains what I believe may be the single greatest line ever written about Led Zeppelin: "If I ever had to hum a blues-metal riff to a puzzled alien, I'd choose Zeppelin's 'Heartbreaker' . . ." Brilliant.
