"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."

One of my favorite reads over the past few years.

“ I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” Great story for a bookcrosser to read!

I did not expect to like this book so much -- the title made it just the kind of foo-foo chick lit book I would never pick up unless someone handed it to me and said "this was wonderful". But I did wonder what the fuss was about, so I loaded the audio version onto my ipod.

Well, I loved this story. I didn't want it to end, I loved all of the characters, and I found the entire story delightful. I also really enjoyed learning about Guernsey (about which I knew nothing), the German occupation, and even some of what it felt like during the war for people in London. Books like this make me wish (more than usual) that I could write stories. The audio version is highly recommended as it was so extremely well done, with multiple actors for the various voices, and all of the lovely British accents.

Now, what can I say about this book? I surely loved it! So many different characters, situations, information sprang from the different letters... and so many emotions! This book made me laugh, lifted my spirits, taught me more about people, broke my heart and fully warmed it... Hard to believe (and perhaps such a shame) that it was the only book Mary Ann Shaffer ever published.

I fully agree with judygreeneyes's remarks (apart from those concerning the audio version because I'm not familiar with it -but sounds like a great idea!). I am so grateful for having been sent this book. I hope you can forgive me for not being willing to part with it! I may make it a ring one day -but not just yet!
