Journal Entry 1 by hannahsc5 from Vancouver, British Columbia Canada on Wednesday, November 19, 2003
Loved this book. It was a quick read but really engrossing. The narrator made me really sympathize with the main character. The back covers writes: Soem situations to avoid when preparing for your all-important-finally-I-am fully-grwon-thirtieth birthday. Having a one night stand with a colleague from work. The rash purchase of luxury items you can't afford. Being left by your wife. Losing your job. Suddenly becoming a single parent. If you are coming up to thrity, whatever you do, don't do any of that.

I went hunting for it at the Starbucks OBCZ a few days back... I will start reading it soon.. I thought the author was a local newscaster by the same name. Turns out it's not, but looks like a good read regardless..

Journal Entry 4 by jblueafterglow from Coquitlam, British Columbia Canada on Monday, April 12, 2004
This book was quite touching. Much more so than I had imagined it would be; possibly due to the fact that I saw a lot of my father in the main character.. I loved the detailed descriptions and reactions of the children, insightful and humorous items that often get over-looked in day-to-day life.. Reserved for goatgrrl. Trade (for Ulysses) to be made soon.

Journal Entry 6 by goatgrrl from New Westminster, British Columbia Canada on Thursday, July 29, 2004

I read Man and Boy while on a business trip to Ottawa (at left: MAB visits Parliament Hill!), so I read it quickly -- on the plane, and in my hotel room. I found the book an easy, enjoyable read -- kind of like reading one of those "young adult" books (S.E. Hinton and the like) you borrow from the library in high school. Parts of it were so sad and sweet, especially the descriptions of Harry's son ("my beautiful boy"), his WWII veteran Dad and his faithful Mum (does anyone have parents like that anymore?). I also enjoyed Parsons' descriptions of the little pockets of rural English countryside Harry discovered from time to time, hidden amongst the suburban sprawl. The parts I didn't like: the excessively political, Kramer vs. Kramer messaging about fathers' rights in the second half of the book, and the fact that by 2/3 of the way through the story, I couldn't see Harry as anyone other than Hugh Grant (it's impossible to believe Parsons didn't have "screenplay" in mind when he wrote this book ...). Without giving away a key piece of the story, the part of Man and Boy I found most amazing and moving was Parsons' harrowingly accurate descriptions of a cancer death. Clearly he's been there. He did an amazing job of describing -- in very few words -- the indescribably awful. If you like this book, be sure to pick up Nick Hornby's About a Boy and Dave Eggers' A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, both of which deal with very similar themes and situations (see also Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Journal Entry 9 by JonAzrael from Plano, Texas USA on Thursday, October 07, 2004
Let me first qualify this entry by saying that, overall, I did enjoy this book, and I found it to be quite an enjoyable light read. However, there were a few things that just didn't sit right with me, mostly involving Harry's ex-wife, Gina. I can understand that Harry's one-night stand hurt her, but she seemed to become such a cold, unfeeling... well, bitch, so quickly and so easily, never seeming remotely interested in trying to work things out with Harry for Pat's benefit, that it almost seemed like she wanted out and was using Harry's infidelity as an excuse. Also, it never seemed to really occur to her that what she had done to Pat by leaving him alone with her deadbeat dad before skipping out on him for months with no real indication of ever coming back was, to me, much worse than Harry's actions. Still, YMMV, I'm sure others would completely disagree with me on that. And it kept me interested enough to pick up the sequel at Half Price Books. Thanks to goatgrrl for sending this to me!
