Following the death of her parents, the book's heroine, Flora Poste, finds she is possessed "of every art and grace save that of earning her own living." She decides to take advantage of the fact that "no limits are set, either by society or one's own conscience, to the amount one may impose on one's relatives", and settles on visiting her distant relatives at the isolated Cold Comfort Farm in the fictional village of Howling in Sussex. The inhabitants of the farm - Aunt Ada Doom, the Starkadders, and their extended family and workers - feel obligated to take her in to atone for an unspecified wrong once done to her father. As is typical in a certain genre of romantic 19th-century and early 20th-century literature, each of the farm's inhabitants has some long-festering emotional problem caused by ignorance, hatred, or fear, and the farm is badly run. Flora, being a level-headed, urban woman, determines that she must apply modern common sense to their problems and help them adapt to the 20th century.
Quite amusing, an enjoyable combination of wit and irony mixed with a fine British humour. Mildly predictible and excessively happy-endish, though.
Soon to be travelling to Bloedengel as a wishlist tag.

Thank you for this! The book arrived safely almost a week ago.
I didn't log it earlier because of some personal sadness.
I hope I will get around to reading it soon.
It will travel eventually.
Thanks for organising and sending !
I completely forgot you 'owed' me a book. I'm almost through with my backlog. The last book I still owe is ... to you .... !

Very well written, but not really my cup of tea.
Can see why it's on the 1001-list though :)

I have had Christmas at Cold Comfort Farm (1940) on my TBR pile for a while, but haven't been able to read that until I got my hands on a copy of this book. Thanks for tagging me with it in the 'Wish List Tag Game - Parallel Thread'.
Received from a very generous bookcrosser in the post along with company in a large parcel. Thankyou so much for sharing :)
