I found this slightly-battered trade paperback at the Salvation Army Thrift Store, and thought I'd give it a try. It looks to be a literary-mashup novel in which Shakespeare is a vampire, and the cover-art detail alone amused me enough to be worth the price of the book! [I've had mixed success with literary-mashup works; some are very witty and entertaining, some are pretty much popcorn for the eyes, and some are very, very bad.]

Later: This turned out to be an enjoyable story, with romance and action - and several delightfully anachronistic bits regarding possible inspirations that strike Shakespeare (usually at inconvenient times); at first the ideas reflect plays he did write, but then they start to get farther and farther afield, as in "I see dead people"...

The premise has Kate, an unhappily married woman who was brought up by her mentor (and powerful magic-user) in Haiti as a chausseur, a hunter of zombies, crossing paths with Will Shakespeare who, unknown to anyone, is a vampire/necromancer who's on a mission to destroy zombies himself. Since Kate does her hunting in boy's garb, Will mistakes her for a lad at first, resulting in some amusing bits about why he's suddenly into guys when he never was before - and when she gets herself hired into his company of players, the girl-playing-a-guy-playing-a-girl convolutions get even funnier. But there are dark sides to all this, from the threat of her husband's displeasure if he returns from the Americas and catches her at her hunting to Will's fear of what Kate will think of him if she learns he's an undead too. Told from both characters' points of view, we get a lively picture of theater life in 16th century London, plus zombies!
