8 out of 10

Cal's story, narrated as a wonderful family saga starting at the beginning of the 20th century in a small village in Greece, is the story of the search of an identity both in the sense of immigrants arriving in the US at the peak of glory of the motor industry, but also identity of Calliope, a girl who is born with a genetic peculiarity that caused a genital deformation, which at the end will see her transformation into Cal.
I loved the prosa and the way Cal, from today's point of view in his day-to-day life, accompanies us readers to see what happened to his grandparents and his parents, and his family, himself included, when he was a little girl. I am now so curious about the other book written by Eugenides, THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, that I am going to put it on my wish list...!

This book is now available for trade.

It's an "epic" book; and, like all epic masterpieces, you love or you hate it.
I really enjoyed this book - absolutely loved the beginning where the story is descriptive of Callie's grandparents' beginning and early life.

P.S. I am in another "Middlesex" bookring. A nice way to read it again ;-)

10 out of 10

Just ended! The story, beginning with Cal's grandparents, start slowly, growing more interesting with Cal's birth, childhood and deep changing...silent, cell by cell...showing up, in a bit shocking way, to everyone when he was a teenager. The last part of his story make me totally involved with him and his deepest feelings, and I really liked this character and his whole personality.

Here it is, a good friend for a snowy day.

Journal Entry 10 by Banshee on Monday, March 15, 2004

Usually I'm not very fond in family's stories, but this is really enjoyable.
I'd like to know more about Cal: is he happy with his new girlfriend? Will he ever meet the Object again? Is he going to write "middlesex part 2"?
Leaving to Joana as soon as I get her address.

Lost in the mail? I don't think so - I have the proof thanks to Banshee. It is too bad that this book was never journalled upon arrival. Very sad indeed, as I had big travelling plans for it. R.I.P. my dear book, I will be on the lookout of another copy to keep the ray going now...

This book seems to be another case for the Lost Book Island as this book didn't get a journal entry to tell the rest of the tale and now previous journalers and other interested parties are left wondering what fate has become of this book.

It is hoped that after a little rest and relaxation at the Lost Book Island Resort this book will again check in with a journal entry so that others may again know its travels.
