The writing style was a little difficult to get into at first but once I got used to it, really helped bring the book to life. It certainly isn't a happy story, but a realistic one. Jelinek can create very visceral reactions with her writing and makes me glad to see how far we've come.

Brigitte works in a factory and dreams of marriage to Heinz, a trainee electrician, as a means of escape. Paula wants to become a seamstress to escape the poverty of her village but then falls for Erich, a forester and a drunk. In Jelinek's description of a harsh and brutal world there is no future for women except by attaching themselves to an uncaring man. Not a hint of romance here but there's something poetical about the unique writing style.

Received, read and ready to pass on to the next reader as part of our London book group read. Thanks to Greenbadger for sending this one on to me, much appreciated and sorry it took so long to register it as received. Looking forward to the next meet up and have already started the next book.
For a slim book this took a lot of time and mental energy to get through. The staccato writing style combined with a lack of punctuation gave it the feeling of a rant or monologue. Female-centric in it's theme, i don't imagine this book found a lot of male fans. For me it had kind of a timeless quality and it was difficult to know when it was when it was set until TV is mentioned at one point. A challenging read and a little depressing to think after so long, many woman still have to assess their lift chances and opportunities through the medium of a male counterpart (husband).
