Hothead Paisan: Homicidal Lesbian Terrorist
5 journalers for this copy...
I picked this up on bag day at the local library booksale for an upcoming bookbox. Even though at first glance it didn't seem like my type of book, I figured since it's a comic it wouldn't take long to read, so I would have a look at it. I was surprised my how much fun it was. In fact, I only stopped reading when it was so dark that even holding it close I couldn't accurately read the smaller text. (Which you definitely want to read for things like a bag of bread with decorations similar to Wonder Bread, but the label reads "nutritionally devoid" or the base of Christopher Columbus statue reading "I found it, It's mine, Kill those people" or any number of other snarky half-hidden comments and decorations.)
There's not really a plot, although there are reoccurring elements and characters. I found the first couple of issues a little weaker and more scattered, but as the author says she started out drawing Hothead as a personal vent, that makes sense.
As long you aren't easily offended, and if you enjoy ridiculous, violent, political humor and cats, you may very well find this book an entertaining read.

Sending along to Gorydetails in her LGBT Bookbox!
The box arrived safely today; many thanks! This graphic novel is one I hadn't heard of before, and it looks like fun. (I appreciate the rainbow labels, too!)
Later: It did take me a little while to get into the scratchy/angry art style, but once I did I found myself enjoying Hothead Paisan and her diatribes, fantasies, and rebellions. And I was amused to find that, just as I was thinking that some of the strips were a bit too over-the-top angry, the character started wondering that herself. I had to love Chicken the cat, too, of course. And some of the fourth-wall-breaking that went on, such as when the author asks Hothead to put on a T-shirt because she's tired of drawing "that fucking bathrobe". The trip to Provincetown, the cats' yoga class ("Playin' the cello!"), Alice trying to get through to Hothead - lots of good stuff here!
