This was the 2nd book I read from author Torey Hayden. After this book, I began a fan or her stories. Hayden is a former special education teacher who has written a series of non-fiction books chronicling her work with children with special needs. "One Child" is about 6-year Sheila who is temporarily sent to Hayden's class while awaiting accommodation in a mental institution. Hayden discovers that Sheila is gifted, yet has some severe emotional problems. What transpires within the pages of this book between Sheila and Torey Hayden is emotionally rivetting. A must read for anyone interested in education!
