"extraordinary coming-of-age odyssey....journey of love, pain, and renewal with the most heartbreakingly comical heroine.... both a fragile girl and a hard-edged cynic, so tough to love, yet so inimitably lovable: Dolores Price.

Just received it in the mail today from JDT. I'll probably start reading tomorrow, but it's likely to take a while to finish it. Wedding plans, holidays, switching jobs... Stuff tends to try to get between me & my books! But once I've read it, I'll post again, and pass it on. :)

I couldn't finish it. I got to the part where Dolores was raped, and just couldn't finish it. *sigh* There was just nothing edifying about it at all, and it was a bit depressing. So, I'm going to release it.

I didn't pick this book up right away from the stack of books at tonight's meetup. But when someone started talking about it, I got interested. It looks like I might like it going by the backing description. Thanks for coming to the meetup!

2004 Book #41: She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

I have to say I really liked this book. I was really wrapped up in the story and I really felt for the main character. Unlike some other books I've rejected that are depressing and the character is, well, a loser, this story was different in that although this main character, Dolores Price, was a girl/woman with serious problems a lot of it was caused by her not knowing anything different, from never having experienced a healthier outlook on life. A lot of what happens to her and what she does to herself is influenced by the examples the women in her life, her mother and grandmother, set for her. Her grandmother is a domineering, bitter woman and her mother is a cowed, nervous woman (thanks to her mother). The men in this story are inconsiderate and selfish and just... completely useless. Her father leaves her mother when Dolores is little girl after some reprehensible behavior (which her mother allows and even condones) and every other male that appears in the story after that only make life worse for Dolores. That is, until a pleasantly surprising change in the end. And that's another thing I like of this story. I'm never one for always having a happy ending because that's just not what real life is all about, but considering all the things Dolores went through, it was good to think that maybe something might go right for this woman AND part of it is also because Dolores finally learns to take her own life in her hands and try to make a change.

And a small note about the author. Or rather some comments made about him. It seems a lot of people are amazed that the author is male while the main character is both female and her character is well-developed. By a man! Well, I don't find this surprising. This is not a fluff piece. This is a story about a woman going through some depressing and at time self-destructive things. Most men don't write fluff, but destructive most can do and that's what this was about for the majority of the book...
