First things first - I hated this book. HATED it. I had to force myself to manage to read through to the end. The only reason I did so was that it is on the 1001 book list, and I was determined that it wasn't going to get the better of me. The main things which irritated me were:
1. The use of "Gertrude Stein" continuously. It was "Gertrude Stein said this" and "Gertrude Stein did that". It drove me up the wall.
2. The constant name dropping. For example, Picasso comes to tea, along with Satie, Hemingway, Ford Madox Ford, Fitzgerald, Matisse, the list goes on...
The one thing I didn't mind in the whole book was the ending, which I thought was a neat way to finish.

Now this sounds like an intersting read ;) Thanks for sending it along with so many other 1000-Bücher challenge books!
I think this was the most entertaining autobiography I´ve ever read. And I loved the conversational style in which it is written. It´s quite funny how Gertrude Stein uses Alice to narrate her life to us. And I didn´t mind the namedropping at all because Gertrude Stein seems to have known and met quite a lot of famous people in her life. Really fun to read!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I tried to read this last year and gave it several tries; but I gave up, couldn't get into it. It's one of those books that I might enjoy at some point but that aren't a good read for me at the moment.
I'm sending this along to another bookcrosser who had this on her wishlist. But I'm not saying who it is because it's a surprise :)
This is very interesting. Either I'm the winner or the decoy. Oh ... the anticipation.
Thank you for the nice book with lots of little , oh so cool , surprises in between the pages.
I love it !
