I found this fair-condition paperback (older edition with different cover than shown) at the Used Book Superstore, and as I'd enjoyed the book in the past I was glad to have another release copy.
In a departure from her "Dark is Rising" and "Boggart" series, Cooper has written an unusual and charming novel about a modern-day young teen whose only joy in life is his participation in a Shakespearian acting company. When his troupe gets to perform at the rebuilt Globe Theatre in London, he's ecstatic - but once there, Nat falls ill one evening, and awakens in 1599, as a performer in the real Shakespeare's company... The period details range from horrifying to delightful as Nat learns about life in this time, and about the finer points of acting in the original Globe Theatre. Will the play - "Midsummer Night's Dream" - be a success? And will Nat remain here, or find his way back to his own time?
The book took me by surprise - several times - as it wound to its conclusion. Gave me a slightly different perspective on "A Midsummer Night's Dream," too...
[There's also an audiotape version of the book, unabridged, read by Jim Dale (who also read the American versions of the "Harry Potter" books, and who does a very fine job); I enjoyed it very much.]
