A beautiful, sad, slow-moving novel. Basically it's about an elderly man who sets out on foot, crossing England, to see his dying former colleague. But there is a bit more to the story, it's about illness - cancer, Alzheimer - about life & death, about love, relationships, parenthood, grief and loss, memories, guilt... about humanity. At times the story gets quite close to something very kitschy, overly sentimental, but then it just about passes it by.
A lot of scenes still resonate in me - as they most probably will to everybody who ever lost a dear person to cancer.

I really really loved it, It focuses on the value of friendship, humility, self-forgiveness and human kindness.

My favourite quote and I think of many people: "Harold could no longer pass a stranger without acknowledging the truth that everyone was the same, and also unique; and that this was the dilemma of being human."

I highly recommend this book

Chosen from the u bookring.

I had heard good things about this book and decided that now was the time to read it. It didnt disappoint. The story centres around Harold, a nice, normal retired bloke who gets a letter from a former colleague telling him that she is in a hospice and dying from cancer. Harold decides to write her a letter and then goes to post it but end up walking past several postboxes until he is basically walking the 500 plus miles to get there. This book is basically his journey. The highs, the lows, the people he meets, his feelings past and present. And its a great journey to go on with him.
