I found this fair-condition softcover among the charity-sale books at a local Hannaford's. It's the first of a series of light novels that's spawned anime and manga adaptations. (I enjoyed the anime.)
Later: Very amusing tale, narrated by high school boy Kyon, about the antics of his classmate Haruhi. She craves the unusual, and has formed a club specifically to entice any ghosts, ESPers, aliens, or time travelers to join. In an unusual twist, the members of her club do in fact include an ESPer, an alien, and a time traveler... and, as if that weren't enough, it seems that Haruhi herself has the ability to warp reality to be as she wishes, though she doesn't know that she has this power. [The whole story seems to be something of a mind-screw; are the unusual club-members here because Haruhi wanted them to be, and if so, would they exist at all if she didn't want it so badly? Or were they drawn here because her power is too dangerous to be left unmoderated?]
A lot of humor, plenty of weirdness, and a few rather shocking bits - great fun!
[There's a TV Tropes page for the series with lots of entertaining info.]
