Flip me, this was brilliant! Kate O'Brien is a bit of a marvel. She makes Ana the sort of heroine you really want to be.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Having had this on my shelf for ages, I finally found an excuse to concentrate on it. It's a bit of a tome and not a novel to skim - it took me twice as long as intended to finish because the wording and plot are so involved. Although the premise and protagonist were interesting, I found the narrative quite dull (sorry!). It's a great shame because I want to learn more about Iberian history to tie into my Portuguese learning. The treatment and control men wanted to exert over women was, and in some places still is, disturbing. I also dislike the author's frequent use of the word 'hysterical'. On theme for Tudors - set during the reign of Elizabeth.
Picked up at the York BookCrossing meetup
This is a very good book - beautifully written, evocative of time and place, and with an appealing heroine. So it's entirely my fault that I wasn't able to get myself sufficiently motivated to finish it. There were just too many political machinations and samey conversations between Ana and Antonio for me, so I'm going to bring it back to find a worthier reader than I.

I read Kate O'Brien's 'Farewell Spain' years ago and liked it a lot - and I love golden age Spain, so this looks interesting.
This book tells the tale of Ana de Mendoza, Princess of Eboli, favourite of Philip II of Spain and widow of one of his best-loved counsellors, her affair with another of the King's counsellors, and Philip's terrible punishment. That said, the focus is less on the actual affair, more on Ana's emotional and spiritual reactions as it unfolds - a complex, slow-moving chronicle of one woman's inner feelings - fascinating and unexpected.
To be released at the Brigantes pub, at the January meeting of the York book-crossing Meet-up group.
Picked up at Brigantes Bar, York.
