Shadows is an evocative extended prose poem, in which the tragedy of a Zimbabwean farming family unfolds against the historical backdrop of the war for liberation. Here is an unforgettable saga that will resist the shadows of time."

A strong and sad bok! Very well written.
I specially found the parts where mans relations to the earth, the soil they growed and their relations to/respect for their anscestors, quite beautiful.
Even if the Word beautiful seems wrong to use, in a book written in the shadows of a liberation war and the afterglove of the war.
"The women and the men felt the warmth of the soil in the cracked soles of their feet, in their palms,as they weeded the fields. The soil stuck to their feet and palms, like brown patches on their skin. They did not mind. It was life.
Johana's father breathed warm air and felt it was the gift of this new land. He felt the warmth of the soil in his heart. The soil too felt his presence in its new heartbeat of ploughs and planting, harvesting and ploughing.
There were hard days too."

An interesting book, written in a very poetical and lyrical tones, which made me discover an area and culture I had very little idea of. But I had a very hard time following what was happening, with all the jumping around in time.
