An Australian girl planning to study Italian in Florence becomes involved with a chef who teaches her to cook. She stays with him, working in his restaurant, returning to Australia periodically when her love life becomes too difficult, but constantly being drawn back to Italy and the food she learns to love. The love story is not the best ever, nor are the recipes, but the combination is engaging. Pithy Italian proverbs provide themes for sections of the story.
