I will be honest--- i was skeptical picking this up. First, I am not a huge history fan (and this is well-researched but historical fiction). Second, this was written by the mother of a former high school friend (so it is hard to read such things objectively sometimes).
However, i was pleasantly surprised--- this really is a great book--- the details really bring the story to life, and the subtle internal journey of the characters is sometimes just as compelling as the sea voyages.
