By Balloon to the Sahara (Choose Your Own Adventure #3)

I enjoy choose-your-own-path books, and was pleased to come across this good-condition paperback at a local charity sale. [I got it some time ago and only just found it under the couch while doing some cleaning; perhaps I should tidy up more often!] Judging by the cover art, the possible choices are quite... varied - and, it turns out, so they are, with results including alien encounters, submarine attacks, visits to desert tribesmen, and odd combinations of all of the above! The book's very fast-moving, with significant choices on almost every page; some of the plotlines cross others, allowing for re-use of some obstacles, while others take their own paths, and overall I found it a lot of fun. The tone helps; the instructions include breezy advice such as, after falling into the water, "take a deep breath and turn to page 14". Or, after one bad choice, "This could be the end - but it doesn't have to be. Turn to page..."
And while some of the satisfactory endings involve wealth and/or fame, others focus on scientific achievement or on much more low-key personal satisfaction - a nice blend. [The bad endings vary, too, from various kinds of death to simpler "they thought we were mad".] Very good example of the choose-your-own style!

Our kids were very excited when we found this book at the Hopkinton Fair. We were waiting in line for the ferris wheel when we found it. I always loved choose your own adventure books when I was a kid and I hope my kids will love them, too. What a great idea BookCrossing is!
