Tomorrow I will be taking a 36 hour train journey from Guangzhou to Harbin so plenty of reading time, though I am taking many books with me. Hopefully I will get this read and released somewhere in north China during the next week. It has been on the shelf neglected for too long.
Finished volume 1 at the end of a holiday. Lots of reading time when it is -20 outside.
When reading I have images in my head of the characters from the tv series Monkey Magic that I watched as a child.
I did not know that it was Journey to the West until I moved to China. I am enjoying reading about the characters - volume 1 is mostly the backstory of how the characters got together.
Volume 1: chapters 1 to 25, 585 pages.

The story is getting a bit of the same thing all the time.
the characters arrive somewhere, some kind of demon kidnaps the preist and it is down to monkey to save the day. To be honest I feel sorry for monkey as he gets so little credit for what he does. If it was not for him they would all have been dead long ago, however Sanzang has a lack of faith in him, believes what anyone says about him that is negative and so is quick to punish him or send him away. I find Sanzang to be a bit sanctimonious.
