I am splitting the USDUDE list into two shorter lists in the interests of getting this book to people as quickly as possible.

This is the USDUDE(2) list:

Lorelei03 / Flushing, NY / USA (done)
Jaremeister / Albuquerque, NM / USA (done)
illinicheme / Oakland, California / USA (done)
sleone / Oakland, California /USA (done)
janaqq / Austin, Texas / USA (done)
geniedances / Houston, Texas / USA
sharalsbooks / Mesa, Arizona / USA
kkitlon / Two Rivers, Wisconsin / USA
grover3d / Charleston, West Virginia / USA
Seferim /Columbia, Maryland / USA
MonstrousWalker / Bainbridge Island, Washington / USA

You know the drill -- journal the book when it arrives, read the book as expiditiously as you can, contact the next person on the list to confirm that he/she still wants the book and to get a postal address, send the book off, and make another journal entry (with insightful comments) to say that the book is on its way to the next reader.

And while you are waiting for the book check out Moore's DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTY? website.

There are now five copies of DUDE, WHERE'S MY COUNTRY? travelling on five interlocked Rings, two in the US, one in Canada and one in Europe and one in Australia and the Pacific. Use the links below to read journal entries from the other loops:

USDUDE(1)

Got this from ecoboy this week - along with the warmest, sweetest surprise. Thank you for sending smiles to a stranger!

I pledge to put this first on my reading list - will begin today!!

Journal Entry 4 by Lorelei03 from Queens, New York USA on Saturday, November 29, 2003
Well, I've finished reading Dude, Where's My Country and I'm glad I read it - I don't think I would say that I enjoyed it, though. I spent the entire first two chapters stopping, putting the book down, and asking my husband if he knew that Bush's first business venture was partially funded by bin Laden family money, etc. etc. I did enjoy Moore's tone - alternating between outraged and humorous. And I enjoy his hard truths and the fact that they were aimed at both liberals and Bush-ites.
After reading this book, I have to say that I hope Frank Rich of the NYT is right - "[Michael Moore] may be more of a factor in the next election cycle than all the other, more glamorous oscar attendees now lining up at fund-raisers for Howard Dean."
I think that's the idea behind ecoboy's mass bookray efforts - and I commend him!

Journal Entry 7 by wingjarewing from New Port Richey, Florida USA on Sunday, January 18, 2004
This was an awesome book, and I'm so glad I was able to read it, especially with elections just around the corner. Let's just say that politically, I have been asleep for quite some time now. Moore woke me right up! This is such an important book, one that every American should read, regardless of how much they may like or dislike Bush and his bunch. Thank you ecoboy for sharing this, passing it on to the next in line today...

Journal Entry 8 by illinicheme from Novato, California USA on Thursday, February 5, 2004
Arrived today. Should start it in a day or two. I'll journal again when finished.

Sigh.

Michael Moore, Michael Moore. Rabble-rouser, that's for sure. Dirty job that somebody has to do, but he'd be a bit more effective if he grounded all of his paranoia in reality.

The first half of this book is excellent. Moore organizes available news information into a series of pressing and important questions, and maintains a good balance between humor and outrage. Every American voter should be required to read the first half of the book prior to entering a voting booth in November. But I'm surprised by how many people have said "this book totally opened my eyes!" because although Moore provides good structure and summary for the Bush presidency, I didn't read anything of which I wasn't already aware. And I don't even watch the news or regularly read the newspapers. (I do live in California though, so it's almost impossible not to encounter almost constant rants about the Bush presidency).

As for the second half of the book, Moore makes a number of excellent points, but they almost get lost in the jumble of half-baked conspiracy theories and extreme exaggerations. Although Moore seems to be speaking to all Americans, conservative and liberal alike, the second half of the book reads more like a call to action for people who are already liberal. That's great - except that he does so much slamming of people who identify as conservative that he runs a big risk of offending (and thus losing) any of his conservative-leaning audience who may have been starting to see things in a different light during the first portion of the book. And he leaves no room whatsoever for us moderates of the world who've been completely left out in the cold by both parties.

My biggest gripe with the book is the massive rant about corporations, with no mention whatsoever about overpaid entertainers in Hollywood/sports/etc. There is certainly a big need to get corporate greed under control. And it's a good point to try and get people to wake up to the fact that they will most likely never be rich. But it would have been easier to swallow "Horatio Alger Must Die" if it wasn't coming from someone who is a rags-to-riches story. Yes, CEOs are grossly overpaid, but so are you Michael. (And don't try to back up "you will never be rich" with a bullcrap "your chances are 1 in a million" statistic, at least not without telling us where you pulled that from. Especially since about 1 in 140 people in the US are millionaires.)

Overall a very worthwhile read to help each voter clarify where they personally stand on the issues. Alas, there is still no party for a fence-sitter like myself, but I just do my darndest to vote responsibly in November. Unfortunately, anyone smart enough to run the country in a responsible and educated manner is also smart enough to completely steer clear of the job. Maybe someday in my lifetime we'll encounter a candidate with a brain, but I'm not holding my breath.

And for the record, I did not vote for the Governator.

If Oprah refuses to run, maybe John Stewart will?

Thank you ecoboy for making such a big effort to get this book out to as many people as possible before November. I will pass this along to sleone in the morning.

Received in today's mail. I've started it and it is amazing that the mainstream media seem to have caught up to Moore in their questions of Bush.

Overall , I liked the book. Some of the hype was over the top for me, maybe that's what's needed to get the message across.

Well I receieved 3 bookring books within days from one another. I read this one first.

It is just amazing what lies are told to the American people, and so many are believed.

I have never been a fan of the God Bless American song, what about the rest of the world???

I think I am learning a lot about the Patriot Act which is a little sickening.

I liked the questions MM had for Bush in the first section of the book and also the Whopper chapter.

A wooohooo goes to Ann Sparanese who sent an email out to librarians to let them know about the banning of "Stupid White Men" by the publisher Murdoch. The published insisted on MM rewriting the offesive parts about the president. The Murdoch police told Moore that they were getting hate mail from librarians. And Moore replied "I guess that's one terrorist group you don't want to mess with." xii

Favorite quotes from the book:

But the cold bitter truth--and the best kept political secret of our time--is that Americans are more liberal than ever when it comes to both the lifestyles they lead and the positions they take on the great social and political issues of the day. 167

Is it common sense for 75 million people to go without health insurance for the past 2 years? NO. Is it common sense to let just five companies own all the major sources of information and news in America? NO. Is it common sense to see that every person has a job and makes a livable wage? THAT MAKES GOOD SENSE. 180

You live in a nation full of progressive-thinking, liberal-leaning, good-hearted people. 181

I believe:
that guns should be more expensive,
abortion legal,
in the environmental movement,
everyone should be able to obtain health insurance, people that sell or smoke pot shouldn't be sent to prison,
equality in the workplace for gays and lesbians.

Don't forget to register and VOTE!!!!

I will send this on to the next person in line later this week. Thanks for sending it my way.

Moore begins by organizing news information into a question & answer format. A series important questions with answers based on various news sources. I'm not at all surprised by how many people have said "this book totally opened my eyes!" because many of his news sources were those many Americans do not access easily. While sources such as BBC are available, the majority of Americans tend to tune in the major networks, ABC,CBS and NBC where details are often missing and the rating game is played. I was familiar with a number of his comments as I've made a point to keep up to date via BBC, NPR, the Guardian newspaper and several other news sources. If he tends to go over the top from time to time, I think its because the opposition (examples: Rush Limbaugh, Anne Coulter) tend to go over the top in the opposite direction. Its a way to get someone's attation and it does seem to work.

Kudoos to Ann Sparanese who rallied her fellow librarians into a protest by letting them know about the banning of "Stupid White Men" by the publisher Murdoch. What an outrageous decision by a publishing company!

Overall I found the book to cover serious issues well and throw in some much needed humor from time to time. Moore does have his own way of trying to wake people up about what is happening in the government. This is an important accomplishment in its own right. I can only hope it will encourage everyone to VOTE!

Most excellent book and what an eye-opener! Michael Moore voices alot I have already thought in addition to some things I hadn't thought about. This country better wake up and smell the coffee and get Bush out of office before it's too late.

Thanks Ecoboy for starting this ring. Sure hope many more people get the opportunity to read this book.
