This handy volume is a compendium of the start of Miles Vorkosigan's career. It includes 'The Warrior's Apprentice,' 'The Mountains of Mourning,' and ' The Vor Game.' 'Vor Game' won the Hugo in 1991, 'Mountains of Mourning' won both the Hugo and the Nebula in 1991, and really, 'Warrior's Apprentice' isn't too shabby either.

Bujold's writing is both funny and suspenseful, and the characters are well-developed and likeable. Just try reading as far as page 11. Hooked yet? Go ahead and enjoy the whole book! We Twin Cities BookCrossers are proud to share one of the best of our many talented writers.

This arrived home in the SF bookbox, and will be kept and read (tho expect it to take awhile to get to it). Thanks for the recommend, JS :)

Oh dear....again....
Iwas looking for my 'next read,' and when I picked up ''Americanah," I discovered the stack under that 'waiting to be read book,' is comprised entirely of 'waiting to be jounalled' books. Arrrrgh.

Soooooo a year plus later, what do I remember? Largely, that it was highly entertaining :) And that while having a charming con/ scallywag as the hero,
having such a malformed one is. I remember it as a fun read, some sections more than others, though at this late date I can't begin to tell which.

And now that it has turned up, and there's loads of empty space, I'll add this to lane 1088's Science Fiction bookbox, and use a little less bubble wrap ;)

I'm claiming this from the SF bookbox.

A friend of mine got me onto the Vorkosigan books long ago, after describing them as a kind of Regency-romance/space-opera saga - and that does cover a lot of the delightfully witty banter, clever plots, and intense character-driven story arcs. Things do get dark - Miles is nothing if not introspective, and has challenges that would break most people - but he's a master of gambits, and has the devil's own luck...

While Miles is always fascinating, my favorite book in the series is the one-off Ethan of Athos; go figure!

[There's a TV Tropes page on the Vorkosigan saga, with some entertaining tidbits.]
