From the back: Hernie Perera runs the furniture department of Benson's, the largest store in Singapore. In his spare time he writes stories. Suddenly, his comfortable life is shattered. His father is found to have terminal cancer, he loses his job, and his lover joins the 'Children of the Book', a Christian sect committed to overthrowing an oppressive government.

4 out of 10

To be honest: I didn't understand Hernie Pereras behaviour which was quite irrational, not to say idiotic. He has to be very ignorant about his environment to not have noticed what's going on in terms of the government against the people and elementary human rights. But if you're told that you would suffer if certain things happen in a certain way – would you do just that without even considering the price you'll have to pay? That's exactly what Hernie is doing, and I don't think his motives were convincing. Were there any apart from physical ones toward his lover anyway? No, Barathams goal is obvious but not well presented.
