The Tavern on Maple Street
2 journalers for this copy...
Ah, there's nothing like a quiet pub to soothe a man's soul, and the ramshackle old tavern tucked away at the end of Belfast's historic Maple Street is a tranquil haven, not only for its loyal regulars, but also for proprietors Jack and Lily Beaumont. But when a real-estate developer announces plans to raze the pub's neighborhood and put up a shopping mall, Jack and Lily realize they have only a few months left to make their business as profitable as they can before their way of life is destroyed.
When Lily hires four young lasses to serve as bartenders (and magnets for eager young male customers), their life turns upside down. Creating a microcosm of Irish society within quirky Belfast neighborhoods is Owens' stock-in-trade (her previous novels include The Ballroom on Magnolia Street, 2005), and the denizens of Maple Street represent her most charming creations yet. Owens clearly knows, and loves, this city and these people.

Chose this from the Food Book Box.
This is a sweet feel-good story about a couple who own a tavern in Belfast, a very quiet tavern mostly frequented by 3 old men. Everyone is happy with this arrangement, but then a developer hatches a plan to build a big shopping mall on that block. Every other business owner on the block sells. What will Lily and Jack, the owners of the tavern, do?
Lily decides she is going to save the tavern somehow. She hires 4 barmaids and gets busy advertising.
The story has a happy ending for all but one character. I felt sorry for the one who got left out of all the happy endings. That would probably be my only complaint about this book. It isn't meant to be great literature, it is more of a happy fantasy. If the author is going to write happy endings for her characters, why leave one out. Left me feeling slightly disappointed.

I am going to list this book with the ABC VBB.
