When I saw this at the May meeting of the Wellington BookCrossers, and after hearing Edwardstreet recommend it from Chile for the 666 Challenge I 'caught' it.
Couldn't remember whether or not I had already read a book from Chile but once I returned home I checked and found that I had read one from Chile a couple of years earlier; I'm in my third year of the challenge and continue to enjoy it. Surprising what one can learn from varying the genre of choice. Thanks for the encouragement Edwardstreet.

I wasn't sure what I would find when I started reading this book. Allende is writing her life story for her daughter Paula who is in a coma partly to convey her life story to Paula when she recovers but also as a means of coping while she is doing sickroom duty. Porphyry is an unpleasant condition that affects other members of the Allende family. Sitting for hours on end at the beside of a beloved daughter takes grit and determination and writing her own life story is a way for Allende to take her mind off the trauma going on beside her. It is a story of life in a tumultuous time in Chilean history and a very vigorous and adventurous life experienced by Isabel herself.
Isabel has always been a letter writer, exchanging letters each day with her own mother. The two of them would bundle their letters up with ribbons each year and keep them as precious memories. Isabel spares no details of her various love interests and one wonders exactly what Paula would think should she ever read these intimate details of her mother's sex life.
I knew almost nothing of the turbulent history of Chile, governed for some time by Isabel's uncle, nor even much of the geography of the wider region that the family traversed, so as with most of the 666 challenge it was a great learning experience for me. There are many interesting characters portrayed, some more loveable than others. There are strong family bonds and family loyalties. Paula's husband Ernesto was perhaps my favourite. His devotion to and loving care for his recently married wife was memorable.
As Isabel was born in Cuba albeit of Chilean parents I have counted this book as from Cuba for the 666 challenge. Throughout her life, she lived in Chile, Bolivia, Lebanon, Spain, and Venezuela

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Released at irregular BC meet-up at Zaika Indian Restaurant, Cnr Dixon and Willis street, on the occasion of FutureCat's visit to Wellington. Small, delightful gathering of enthusiastic bookcrossers. I was delighted when a BXer who'd lent me an Isabel Allende book for the 666 Challenge was interested to catch this book.
Happy reading CLF.

Found this a very moving book about Isabel's daughter's serious illness and while sitting at her hospital bedside there was plenty of time for reflection.
