I like travel logs, and I've recently much enjoyed books on China, so I was quite excited to have found this. Unfortunately, I also had my expectations up so much that I ended up rather disappointed.
Evans' journey around China is interesting and fun to read, but her prose... Well, I wish somebody else would have done the writing for her. There are just waaay too many descriptions and adjectives everywhere, which I found harder to bear with every passing chapter. (And Polly, please: don't keep putting commas everywhere! Despite what you seem to think, "grey,[sic!] concrete house" is not an enumeration!) Also, the fact that people speaking languages other than English were described as "jabbering" on almost every occasion really annoyed me. I'm by no means a fan of political correctness, but Anglo travel writers have this way of being whiny and patronising at the same time that *really* pisses me off and has ruined more than one book for me.

Having said this, "Fried Eggs" is a fun book, and a great way to learn about China. (The history bits certainly were my favourite parts of the book!) I was especially charmed when Evans mentioned Wuxi (if only in passing), where we have friendly and business ties to. ;) Also, I much sympathised when she described looking forward to meeting friends or even other foreigners -- a feeling I've often shared when working abroad. There is this stage of having been tired and lonely for just that little bit too long, and I love when somebody admits to that despite all the optimism and funniness that travel writing apparently requires.

I probably won't go and look for the records of Evans' other journeys, but if you are in the least bit interested in China, you may well get a pleasant read out of this.
This is my "E" hattrick book read for the ABC challenge.
