Bujold deals with universial questions in this book, and does a fine job in not providing pat answers. How do you come back from an experience that shatters you? How do you then make a contribution to your world, and the people who depend upon you?

Caz comes out of captivity after a disasterous war as a shattered man. Looking for peace and a haven, he finds his way to his old haunts. But instead of respite, he is confronted with a threat that threatens all that he holds dear.
