Released 11 yrs ago (9/8/2012 UTC) at Thegoaliegirl's Travel Narrative bookbox, A Bookbox -- Controlled Releases
CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Sent out to start my latest travel narrative bookbox.
Taken from the bookbox, at the request of 6of8, though I may read it before I pass it along to her.
As a professional tour guide, Dave Fox’s travel philosophy (articulated on page 7) is “When you travel, things go wrong.” Not that he necessarily thinks that this is a bad thing...on the contrary, it is often exactly when things go wrong during a trip that we learn the most about the places we visit. And the entire point of traveling is to learn about other places and other people.
This book is a memoir of the author’s earliest travel experiences, which helped lead him on the path that ended with him embracing travel as a profession. Fox is almost as neurotic as Bill Bryson, and writes with a similar, ironic sense of humor. There are many places that caused me to laugh out loud, especially when he puts the Pink Floyd lyrics “How can you have any pudding if you don’t eat your meat?” into the context of an English grammar school from the viewpoint of a student more familiar with American schools.
The events described in this book do seem to support his thesis that things do go wrong when you travel, but they also show how that can, in the end, become a good thing to a traveler willing to embrace the experience. It certainly makes me want to read more about his travel experiences, and possibly even employ his services as a tour guide. One thing’s for sure, traveling with him isn’t likely to be boring!

Passing along to 6of8 at the October BC-in-DC meeting. Enjoy!
ResQgeek was kind enough to let me piggyback on his turn with the bookbox and select this wishlist book. I actually am looking forward to reading it even more now that I have read his review. Adding to Mt. TBR.
I snatched up this book from the top of the pile during my days off due to Superstorm Sandy because (a) it was at the top of the pile, and (b) it was not as thick as the other books around it.
I enjoyed this collection of Fox's adventures in travel, from the year he spent abroad with his family to his time as a foreign exchange student in high school to his wanderings through Europe during college. I kind of agree with him that things go wrong when you travel -- I refer to these episodes as adventures or even "adventures", depending on how costly they were financially or psychologically -- and often that is the best part. Certainly when you think of the travel stories you tell over and over and laugh about for years, it isn't the time you had that nice quiet little meal in city X that comes up, it's driving in the rain on a dirt road in Ireland barely wide enough for your car when you encounter one coming the other direction and panic trying to remember which side of the road you are supposed to be on.
So I had to chuckle sympathetically with getting lost while running a fever in Turkey or trying to survive Battle Mosquito in the Far North, stumbling up a volcano alone in Iceland or taking a picture of something you shouldn't in Tunisia. As always with books written in the last few years, I could have done without the use of the F word, but for the most part it was not overused. And, despite the two disclaimer chapters, I was not shocked or appalled or offended by the consumption of alcohol by indigenous persons or underage persons or almost every other person in the book.
Think I will take this with me to Birdie's this weekend and add it to the OBCZ there when several of us gather to remember MaryZee.

Took this with me to the mini-meet-up in Westminster in honor of MaryZee. Not sure if this went home with someone or if it ended up on the shelf of the OBCZ at Birdie's.
I picked up this book from Birdie's Cafe in Westminster, Maryland, at a BC in DC Meet-up.
I'll admit it. I was attracted to this book by its weird cover. :)

It's time to do some serious culling of books in my "To Be Read" pile. I might live a long, healthy life, but there is no way I'll ever read all the books now in my possession. I chose this as one of the books to begin moving on.
Farewell and happy traveling, little book!
