The plot of this is rather dated since it is based on pre-Vatican II Catholicism. The central dilemma still exists for the devout, but the trimmings, which are also important have changed ... although some have since changed back. Anyway, that's another discussion.
I consider myself reasonably well-read and did spot the changes of style, but wouldn't have recognised them as a pastiche without the afterword. With that as a hint I was able to recognise some of them but it strikes me as a bit of an exercise - and a showy off one at that - than a reasonable way to write a novel. Mind you, that could just be sour grapes, because I couldn't pull it off. The shifting around meant that some sections were harder to read than others, but the really clever bit was the way the characters remained themselves through the solemn, the farcical and the Kafka-esque.
