Thanks NorthernLights for this little gem. I've heard of Almighty Voice but I don't know the full story. I look forward to reading this.

It was great to meet you in person at last. Thanks for stopping by Winnipeg and good luck on the rest of your journey.

Well that didn't take long. I finished the book yesterday as a violent thunderstorm hit the city. I couldn't help but wonder if Almighty Voice was making his presence known.

It was good to learn more about this tragedy that resulted in the deaths of Almighty Voice and his two companions and at least 4 of his pursuers. It seems like at any point this result could have been averted. It was after all only a cow that had been killed and the ownership of it was in dispute.

I couldn't help but notice that one of the NWMP constables who was killed had the same last name as my grandfather. My grandfather was born in 1885 but he did have older brothers and probably also uncles and cousins. I don't recall my grandfather ever saying anything about Almighty Voice but families didn't keep in close touch in those days. I'm going to do a little digging to see if there is any connection.

I'll take this book to the next Winnipeg BookCrossing meetup. I think Pooker3 might be interested in it.

Gypsysmom brought this little book to our August meeting, saying she thought I might be interested. You bet I was. I took it home and read it that night! I might have read it too quickly because I became confused at times as to what exactly had happened at various spots in this man hunt, especially when it came to the police and other citizens who became involved in bringing Almighty Voice "to justice". However, that's not entirely surprising given that the author has relied on a number of different sources whose memories and accounts of the event often differ.

My paternal grandparents, born in the 1880s would have recently arrived in Canada, and so would have just been children when this was all happening in 1895. I remember as a young woman chastising my grandfather for some of the racist things he would say. My grandfather was quite open to changing his attitudes and did. But in reading books such as these, I realize how much our world has changed from the horse and buggy days in, really, a very short time.

Thanks NorthernLights and gypsysmom for the chance to read this interesting and tragic story.

Journal Entry 8 by Pooker3 at Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada on Monday, June 24, 2013
This book enjoyed a long run at LFL #2873. It was gone for long stretches of time, but always managed to show up again until I took it out of the library last month intending to give it a new adventure with the Canada Day release challenge. Just how wise that was remains to be seen, but it did have a rather unfortunate brush with the trash can!

I decided to release this book to the tourist information racks in cityplace shopping centre. I did that. As it's a small slim book it fits the rack and displays quite nicely. I was quite happy with the release until I came back to see right then and there, maybe five paces from me, a man take it from the shelf and toss it into the garbage! Yipes! As he was standing there I marched right in front of him and rescued it from the trashcan and just kept walking without a word. I hope he thinks that he missed out on some valuable treasure. Which of course he did!

That is the first time in all my 8 years of BookCrossing over 2000 books that I've ever known one of my books to hit the trash. Luckily it didn't stay there. I found another spot for it. :)
