In December of 1997, the lives of a male tiger and a sometime poacher collided in the Taiga of the North-Eastern Provinces of Russia. It did not go well for the poacher. The author uses this incident to frame the relationship we have with wild tigers and look at how this particuliar collision course was set up. Very interesting and well written. What makes the entire idea work is that tigers are apex predators of a solitary and taciturn nature. Folklore however has always ascribed to the tiger a wrathful and vengeful nature.

I came away fronm this book fascinated.

This was a fascinating read. I have always loved the big cats especially the lions and tigers. I have so much more respect for tigers after reading this book.

This is more than just an animal-eats-man thriller. It begins with a story of a man eating tiger terrorizing a community, but it expands out, covering all the area history, natural history, economics, and culture that surrounded the characters and area where this took place. I am amazed that people live in this area of the world. I wouldn’t survive.

There are many interesting facts about the tigers, how they hunt, how they live, and how they co-exist with man in this area of Russia.
An interesting fact is that there are more tigers in Texas than in the Far East of Russia. I can never look at a tiger in a zoo the same way again.
I read that Hollywood may be getting closer to translating this book to the screen as they have purchased the rights to this book.
