CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

To quietorchid for the upcoming Banned Books Challenge.

Ten years after its publication, Beloved was banned from AP English classes at Eastern High School in Louisville, Kentucky, because of the book’s mention of bestiality, racism and sex. The Coeur D’Alene School District in Idaho has also challenged the book and required students to have parental permission to read it. People have objected to the novel’s violence, the supernatural and infanticide.

Scary book. Pulitzer Prize winner 1988. Challenged in Florida, 1995; Texas 1996; Maine 1997; Florida 1998; Illinois 2006; Idaho 2007; Indiana 2009. Banned Kentucky 2007. For more information about banned books go to the American Library Association page.
