Franck Chopin is not your typical secret agent. Officially an entomologist specializing in the observation of flies, he works somewhat loosely for the Museum. On the sideline, he is a shadow for French Intelligence: a "sleeper", occasionally reactivated. He has also just fallen for the evasive Suzy Clair whose husband, a senior civil servant, vanished six years ago. These various strands come together when Chopin is asked to eavesdrop on a high-ranking Russian apparatchik at a luxury hotel outside Paris. There he runs into Suzy, along with a host of other sub-agents in disguise. The reader is drawn into a world of espionage and counter-espionage - set between a lurid suburban Pairs and the exclusive Parc Palace du Lac - in which the agents are continuously defecting to the East and then returning home. As for the bugs, there are a couple of trained flies fitted up with mini-microphones, to hover, record, transmit and die at the most inopportune moment...
What Chopin discovers is at the heart of this eminently readable, finely translated, witty spoof - a rare blend of caustic verve and neutral observation, a work of extraordinary implicity, rippled only by a subtle, biting humour.

Not usually keen on spoofs but this small book had wonderfully descriptive writing, gentle humour and was read and enjoyed in one evening.
