I have recently discovered the work of this great Canadian poet/novelist, and was thrilled to find this for just 1 euro among books donated to a book/plant sale in aid of the Phoenix Association animal rescue group.
I love this author's books. They have a good story and great characters, but most of all the language is superb. Jane Urquart is a renowned Canadian poet and her poet's soul shines in all her novels too. There are two threads in this story, set in Ontario. Each end of the book is the story of a troubled woman, the tragic death of her lover and the his journals she wants to share with a young man. The middle section is the story of her lover's family and the part of the province they lived in.

Thank you very much, bluenoser. It was good to come home from the market this morning to find a pile of Christmas cards and two books from generous BookCrossing friends waiting behind the door!
As you know, I've read other novels by this impressive author. I think I discovered her by accident when looking for a new-to-me author whose surname began with U for an alphabet challenge I was doing :-) A very happy find!
Thank you also for the accompanying cat/Christmas postcard! Very seasonal!

A beautiful tale, beautifully told!
Thank you!
Thank you!
To a friend who used to BookCross as Zylpha!
Well over a million people around the world give their books a unique BookCrossing IDentity number (BCID) before sending them out to find new readers. Since the start of the scheme in April 2001 more than eleven million such books have been put into circulation. This is one of them!
Our hope is that we can track the progress of our books once they've left our hands - and that's possible if finders like you visit the website, key in the BCID and leave a comment, however long or short. It's fun, it doesn't have to cost anything, although the site always appreciates donations towards running costs, and you can remain anonymous if you wish. You don't have to join but if you do you'll be able to number and track your own books!

I'm afraid I didn't really enjoy this book. I got a bit tired of Sylvia early on and rather bored by Jerome's artistic endeavours. But I did like the poetic descriptions of the bleak and cold Canadian landscape. I shall pass this book on to my daughter without comment and see what she thinks of it.
