Two young people fall off a bridge and drown into the Thames. Was it just another suicide? It turns out that this is not an easy question to answer, and that there is more than just this possibly self-inflicted death that is mysterious.
This is my first encounter with the amnesiac turned policeman William Monk, and I must say, I am rather taken with the character; the plot and and characters are intriguing, but it really is Monk who makes this book more than just another Victorian whodunnit to me.
I'd likely pick up any other books in the series if I found them; I'm sure Monk's backstory, which is frequently hinted at, must be loads of fun to discover in detail. Also, I'd like to hear more about Scruff, Crow and Orme, whom I wouldn't mind to play an even bigger part in a future adventure.
I am, however, slightly annoyed by the verbose prose and feel that Perry overdescribes, especially characters' feelings; to my taste, the editor could have taken out a few good pages of those. This book could be so much better if it was only half (alright, two thirds) as long.

Well, this will be my first Anne Parry-book... Thanks for the recommendation!
Two and a half years ago I took the book home with me as Anne Perry was recommended and I have never read one of her books before.
Finally I did so some years ago, thanks to the reading challenge "Bergabbau-Challenge".
And I have to admit, that the book was not too bad, eventhough generally I do not read historic novels. But - honestly - it was way too long, I would have liked it more with a couple of pages less...
Hope there will be lots of readers more enjoying this book!

Small + not too complicated = commuter food. :)
Edit 21.7.2016: Whow. This one took a while to finish. It wasn't all bad, but I agree with the other readers, it was way too long. I also had to reread several pages, as I wasn't really into the story, just ambled on. Oh, well, I didn't put it away, so maybe it just is not my book. :)
