Different cover. 1971 Edition.
"Set in the darkest days of the Great Depression, this is the timeless story of an 11-year-old orphan's rollicking journey through the Deep South with a con man who just might be her father. Brimming with humor, pathos, and an irresistible narrative energy, this is American storytelling at its finest. Paper Moon is tough, vibrant, and ripe for rediscovery."

After you've read the book, I highly recommend that you see the movie. Tatum O'Neal is one cute kid!
11 year old Addie is sassy and has picked up grown up language. Some of the language and terms in the book are very dated; "colored folk" for example. Written in 1971, but set in the 30's during the Great Depression.
Preying on widows with bibles as gifts seems so very wrong. It was a different time. Their scams would not work as well now. People were more trusting then.
You can't help but fall in love with this little girl - and maybe feel a bit sorry for her too. She is wicked smart, even if she has never gone to school. I imagine her reading everything she can get her hands on - in the car on the way to their next item of "business."
When Trixie shows up, Addie knows how to get rid of her.
This book would easily make it on the banned books list for multiple reasons - truancy, crimes of all sorts, language, racism, blasphemy. You just don't know what is going to happen next, but it is fun waiting to see what schemes "Long Boy" will come up with next. And Addie is a wonderful little actress.

I truly loved this one from the beginning. Though I'm a bit disappointed with the end.

a great story [once you get past the sad & disturbing aspects!] of an amazing, likeable, precocious 11 year old and her adventures with a con man - maybe her father.
told in the pitch-perfect voice of Addy in the south during the depression - with humor, savvy, disturbing experiences, and occasional tenderness.
a classic copy from 1971 - sending to valpete to continue this bookring's journey.

Thanks, I've received it. It will be a while before I can get to this one. Please e-mail me if I'm taking too long.
Completely endearing book...Addie is such an engaging, funny, three-dimensional character with a complex relationship with Long Boy and not dumbed-down like a lot of children in literature.
Sending this off to PerryFran. Thanks for the reminder and your patience.
Received today and look forward to reading this. Paper Moon was always a favorite movie of mine.
Highly enjoyable! I have always been a big fan of the movie version of this novel that came out in the 1970s starring Ryan and Tatum O'Neal but I am now an even bigger fan of the novel - a delightful romp through the depression years as told by Addie Pray, a precocious 11-year old scamp. The movie was pretty faithful to the first half of the novel but most of the second half was not included in the movie. Maybe it was being saved for a possible sequel? Anyway, the whole book is fun story-telling about the lives of two talented con artists in the 30s - also very reminiscent of the movie "The Sting". I guess people had to think up creative ways to survive during that time. High recommendation!

Arrived today. I have a couple of rings before this. But I will keep it moving. Thank you!
Finished this last night. Maybe I've seen the movie so many times - but the book was so very familiar. I feel like I've read it before. A good read.
I have the next address, so this book will be on its way this week.
Thank you for sharing!

It's here (nice cover)! Thanks for sending Lauraloo29! :)
Funny coincidence, I have just started another book which has a similar sort of setting, American Deep South in the 1930's, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers..
Thanks for organising the bookring dicentragirl!

This took me a bit longer to read, but I did enjoy it very much. Addie is such a great character, and Long Boy too. It was fun to read about their adventures (and doing "business"). I haven't seen the movie, but now I'm curious and will keep an eye out for it.
Salvami wanted to be skipped, so the book is now travelling back to dicentragirl. Thanks for sharing the book!
