I got this copy from a used-book store for my 1001-books Reading Challenge. I have read a couple of Steinbeck, but I haven't read this one till now. I enjoyed this little book. It is not a happy reading; it's more sadness and despair, but it was so well-written. I just remember the depression I felt while I was reading Grapes of Wrath: pains and sadness without end or an exit... I can see that this book could be boring for young readers, sadly.
