I thought this was going to be a simple children's story. I should have known better, considering it's by one of the great children's writers of the 20th century!

The book starts innocuously enough, at a holiday camp in a village with an obviously made-up name, where two girls, arriving in quite different parties, discover that they are exact doubles of each other, and it looks as though the book will be about how they come to terms with this. I must admit, this didn't make me all that eager to read on; but then it goes into fast-forward as the girls become friends and discover that they are in fact twins: their parents are divorced, and one girl lives with each parent, hitherto unaware of the other's existence.

Needless to say, the girls change places. Each goes home to the wrong parent, armed with an exercise book full of notes on school friends, daily duties, parental quirks, and so on. On the subject of parental quirks, Kästner freely admits that he is pushing the boundaries of what one can say about adults in a children's book - as many twentieth-century authors, starting a generation earlier with Edith Nesbit, found they had to - as he comes into the open with the circumstances that led up to the divorce.

Well, there's no need to go on with the plot. It is now obvious where the book is going. The girls will bluff successfully for a while, with plenty of opportunities for tension (and for cliffhangers, as Kästner jumps back and forth between the two families), but they will eventually be discovered, with the inevitable result. The only person to behave out of character is Father's girlfriend, who takes it all surprisingly calmly!

Looking at the date of publication, 1949, I realise that Palfy is a contemporary of some of my favourite composers; and that I know almost nothing of the 20th century Viennese school. Berg? Webern? Leverkuhn? No, Leverkuhn was a generation earlier, a fictional composer based on Schoenberg, wasn't he... More research needed!

But this book can now be released, as soon as I've put some more Kästner on my wish list!
